Infineon Launches the E-version of its XDP™ Hybrid Flyback Controller ICs
After pioneering the industry’s first power factor correction (PFC) and hybrid flyback (HFB) combo IC, Infineon Technologies AG is now expanding its portfolio by introducing the E-version of its hybrid flyback controller family. Engineered for high-performance applications, the new XDP™ hybrid flyback digital controller series utilizes an advanced asymmetrical half-bridge (AHB) topology.
This innovative approach merges the straightforward design of a flyback converter with the efficiency of a resonant converter, enabling the development of high-power-density solutions. As a result, these controllers are well-suited for a wide range of AC/DC applications, including aftermarket and OEM chargers, adapters, power tools, e-bike chargers, industrial switching power supplies, TV power supplies, and LED drivers.
Compared to active clamp flyback (ACF) and LLC resonant converters, the hybrid flyback topology provides several key benefits. By reducing magnetic energy storage and operating with lower leakage inductance, it allows for a more compact transformer design. The HFB architecture delivers high efficiency across an extensive output range while mitigating power losses through multimode operation. This leads to lower standby power consumption and enhanced efficiency at low loads, ensuring compliance with Certificate of Conformity (CoC) Tier 2 and Department of Energy (DoE) 7 regulatory standards.
These advantages make HFB technology ideal for developing compact and energy-efficient power supplies. The E-version of the hybrid flyback ICs introduces additional performance enhancements, incorporating patent-pending PFC improvements, synchronized PFC and HFB start-up behavior, and optimization for the latest CoolGaN™ transistors. Moreover, streamlined parameter configuration, alongside a comprehensive design tool and detailed design guide, facilitates seamless integration into advanced power conversion applications.
Attendees of the 2025 APEC event (March 16-20) in Atlanta, GA, can explore this cutting-edge technology at the Infineon booth. Featured products include an ultra-compact 140 W GaN charger, 120 W multiport charger solutions with outstanding standby and partial load efficiency, and an ultra-slim 400 W power supply unit achieving over 97 percent efficiency for DC-DC voltage conversion.
