Infineon Introduces the New BTM90xx Family of Full-Bridge ICs for Brushed DC Motor Applications
As the automotive industry continues to develop, features that were previously considered premium are now considered standard. Consequently, the user experience of the future in the vehicle will be significantly influenced by intelligent low-voltage actuators. Automotive manufacturers are in search of semiconductor solutions that are more cost-effective, energy-efficient, and reliable, even in the presence of severe conditions. In response to this demand, Infineon Technologies is currently expanding its portfolio with the MOTIX™ Bridge BTM90xx family, a product family of full-bridge/H-bridge integrated circuits (ICs) that are expressly engineered for brushed DC motor applications.
The new BTM90xx full-bridge integrated circuits enhance the MOTIX low-voltage motor control integrated circuit portfolio, which ranges from driver-integrated circuits to highly integrated system-on-chip solutions. BTM90xx devices are specifically tuned for automotive applications, including door, mirror, seat, body, and zone control modules, however, they are not restricted to these uses. Safety documentation is provided to facilitate use in safety-critical applications.
The BTM90xx series is distinguished by its advanced capabilities for facilitating clever and compact motor control solutions. The devices operate within a supply voltage range of 7 V to 18 V (extended range of 4.5 V to 40 V) and provide comprehensive safety and diagnostic features, including overtemperature, undervoltage, overcurrent, cross-current, and short-circuit detection. Currents are assessed for both the high-side and low-side switches, and the devices are appropriate for automotive applications with a current limit of no less than 10 A (BTM901x) or 20 A (BTM902x).
PWM operation is feasible for frequency reaching 20 kHz. The BTM9011EP and BTM9021EP are SPI variations that incorporate a pin-saving daisy chain capability to minimize overall system expenses. BTM9021 further incorporates an embedded watchdog. The BTM90xx’s compact TSDSO-14 (4.9 x 6.0 mm) package minimizes the overall PCB footprint and includes a substantial exposed pad that enhances the device’s thermal efficiency.
Infineon offers a full support package for the evaluation and design-in process of MOTIX BTM90xx, which includes technical product documentation, simulation models, a power dissipation calculation tool, evaluation boards, and Arduino example code. Furthermore, the MOTIX BTM90xx Device Driver and the MOTIX Full Bridge IC Configuration Wizard can be accessed at no cost from the Infineon Developer Center (IDC).
